Think piece: The risk of fires in empty buildings 🔥

Did you know that 60 fires occur a day in or beside vacant or derelict buildings?  The latest figures show there were 21,700 fires in empty buildings. The main cause of accidental fires in non-residential buildings was faulty appliances and leads. That's 24% of all fires! The majority of fires occur in commercial buildings, the latest report by the National Fire Protection Association stated that there were 3,700 fires in Retail outlets, 2,900 in Industrial  buildings, 2,500 in restaurants, cafes and pubs, 1,500  fires in Recreational and other cultural service buildings and 6,200 fires in Private garages and sheds. 70% of these fires were started accidentally - 25 people died and 1,200 injuries were reported ( FSGB 2011-12). in 2012 there were 209,000 recorded acts of vandalism against business premises. The cost of arson was estimated to be £1.7bn. average cost per fire (£8,978). The Association of British Insurers advised the APF that money paid out by their members equates to over £1.1bn each year in fire related claims.
