The UK is facing a severe economic crisis, with up to 1/5th of small and medium sized businesses - almost one million companies - facing the likelihood of running out of money within the next four weeks.
In order to assist the cash flow problem that the majority of businesses is facing right now, the Business Secretary Asok Sharma announced on 1st April 2020, that high street banks will receive £22billion backing from Central Government. Grants of up to £25,000 are being made available for high street businesses, and a business rate exemption will be in place.
Unfortunately, it is not as simple as the government saying it will be so, and then it appearing in reality. What is the more likely outcome is that it will take time to process the loans and grants from the banks, and many businesses will not survive.
Even before the COVID-19 outbreak, a large number of high street businesses were failing due to the lack of cash flow and demand on the high street. This has left towns and cities across the country with empty retail units.
Not only are they an eyesore, but they are also a magnet for anti-social behaviour and vandalism.
Despite the Government’s lockdown, criminals are still going about their usual daily activities.
This causes a major concern for the owners of vacant retail units, because there will be no new business willing to take up these units in the foreseeable future and although shutters have been closed down over the properties, wise criminals can easily bypass these barriers.
