How To Save Money on Bills and Reduce Expenses

Posted on April 23, 2022.

Nobody really wants to talk about the rising cost of living, but it’s going to affect us all so it’s important we discuss ways we can reduce our expenses.

One of the things you should consider now that energy prices are increasing exponentially is ways to reduce your usage and therefore the cost. These are small savings but could make a big difference as the prices rise.

The first thing you should do is understand your energy bill and look at where you’re spending the most money. You could do this by employing the use of a smart meter which are usually free from most energy providers and allow you to see how much energy you’re using all the time.

You can start small by reducing costs whilst you’re not at home. This is as simple as remembering to turn things off by the plug sockets and ensuring things like TV’s aren’t left in standby, as standby costs over the year can pile up. Wet appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers account for some of the highest energy costs in a household. Cutting back on how many loads of washing you’re doing by combining them into one larger wash may help, or only putting on a dishwasher when its full.

The next biggest expense is heating. Unless you’re living in a new build property, it’s likely your home will have drafts. DIY draft excluding can save you money in the long run as it will mean you won’t need to heat your home for an extended period of time. You can do this by placing draft excluders at doors, sealing gaps in baseboards or increasing the use of soft furnishings such as rugs and thick curtains.

Reducing the amount of time you spend in the shower can reduce bills more than you’d expect, and even remembering to turn off the lights can make a difference. You can also reduce this further by installing energy efficient lighting within your property or using LED lights.

Prices rising is going to affect everyone so now is the time to think about how you can save money and improve how energy efficient your home is.
